Can I use display overrides on a character rig with no pre-made display layers?

Hi all.

I am trying to get a character rig's mesh onto a display layer, so that I can right click it and go to 'Set Selected Layers > Unshaded', and keep everything else in my scene shaded. I want to do this because the particular motion trail script that I am using (Arc Tracker 2.2 ) is geometry based, and I would like to be able to retain the colours that I choose for my arcs, rather than just set everything to wireframe mode (the screenshot on the page I linked achieves exactly this!).

However, the rig that I am using, the Mery rig, did not come with a pre-existing display layer for Mery's geometry. I have tried to select her geometry in the outliner and put it on a display layer of my own making, but it doesn't let me set the objects on my layer to 'Unshaded'. The attribute editor shows my display layer is capable of doing display overrides, but I guess there is a higher priority rule set by the rig itself?

I also tried to unlock her geometry's attributes with the Channel Control window, but it doesn't let me do this for a referenced rig (and when I tried in a new scene with an unreferenced rig, this also didn't make a difference).

Does anybody know if it is possible to achieve the thing which I am trying to achieve? Thanks very much for your time, guys!
