This a probably a total beginner's problem, but anyway I am quite a beginner and didn't find an answer by browsing the web.
For some reason, many times when extruding faces in Maya, I get extra faces in the model that I didn't want to make. The additional faces come usually just below or above the face/ faces that I have been intentionally extruding.
Some pics to about the latest instance of this happening:

1. First extruded face "inside" to get a smaller face in the middle of it

2. Then notice the extra face has appeared

3. Testing how much extra faces have appeared
