Material won't apply to geomentry

I am having an issue where when I go to apply a material to geometry it won't apply. I am working on an animation on how to use crutches. I have a crutch that I hide and a duplicate that I unhide. The crutch that I unhide will not accept a new material to any of it's surfaces. I am using Maya 2016 ext:2 sp1. I have attached a few screen shots to show the issue.
