texturing glass problem

Hello everybody.

When it comes to texturing my models I have no problem working with UV's.   However, recently I've been playing around with a new model which is a glass wine bottle and I've run into a challenge.   I've been trying to place a label on the bottle (image included) and I'm having trouble with it.    As you can see, the label is longer than it is wide and this is causing distortion when I try to scale it into place. 

The method I used in this case was selecting the geometry and assigning a lambert shader to it.  I then applied the texture map over top and used the UV editor to scale it into place.   As you can see from the image there is a white border around the texture itself and if I scale the texture the sides vanish and I'm left with a poorly centered map on the bottle. 

What other options do I have that will allow me to place the texture on the bottle cleanly with no stretching?     

I've tried bringing in the UV map of the bottle into Photoshop and placing the label into position there by making the outside of the texture a transparency but that didn't work.  The entire bottle turned white with the texture map centered.    Maybe I'm just tired right now so I'm not thinking clearly but there must be a simple solution to allow me to place the map cleanly exactly where I need it to be.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
